A hip Miami Beach hotel-hostel with designer interiors and plenty of buzz from prestigious travel publications

  • Stay at the stylish Freehand Miami, which playfully references a 1960s summer camp without sacrificing an ounce of luxury-travel cachet. The design is the work of the duo behind the Viceroy New York and the Ace Hotel, and has seen the hotel endorsed by the likes of Condé Nast Traveler and The New York Times

  • Escape to the backyard oasis of cocktail bar Broken Shaker, which was voted Tales of the Cocktail’s Best American Hotel Bar. It serves artfully handcrafted drinks every night of the week, in a dimly lit hut where paper flowers cover the walls and real ones spill from vases.

  • Meet some of your fellow travelers poolside in the palm-tree-lined garden. Swim among Instagrammable inflatables or lounge under one of the yellow umbrellas - be sure to grab a matching cocktail from the Broken Shaker, which also hosts regular barbecues and pool parties with DJs.

We like

When you’re not floating in the pretty pool, sunbathing in the garden or making new friends over Broken Shaker’s drinks, you’ll likely be in surrounding Mid-Beach, a hipster favorite, or neighboring South Beach. If you go with the latter, there are a world-famous Art Deco District to see and nightspots to enjoy, plus the dozens of shops of the Lincoln Road Mall. If you stick to the former, you can go skating at nearby Miami Beach EDITION or bowling at the Scott Rakow Center – on or off one of the hostel’s organized excursions. Surfing and paddle-boarding classes are also available and can be set up through Freehand, in conjunction with hostel partner Skybanditz.
